Board of Trustees Pass Second Reading in Lloyd Garrison School Junior High Program Closure Consideration

At the Regular Board Meeting held on March 20, 2013, the Peace River School Division (PRSD) Board of Trustees passed second reading of the Junior High Program Closure Consideration at Lloyd Garrison School. The consideration has been initiated in response to low enrolment in the Junior High program triggering criteria for closure as set out in policy 7.12. The total enrolment in the school’s junior high program is five students, all in grade seven.

“Community input continues to be very important throughout this process” says Nan Bartlett, PRSD Board Chair. “The Board met with the community earlier this month to discuss the future of the school’s junior high program. We value their input and encourage the community to continue to be involved in the process by providing their input in person or in writing.”

Information outlining next steps and possible transitional options is being distributed to Lloyd Garrison School families, staff, community members, surrounding communities and others directly affected. Interested individuals or groups are encouraged to provide written and face to face submissions at the April 16, 2013 Regular Board Meeting where third and final reading will be voted upon.

“This is an emotional and difficult decision” says Paul Bennett, PRSD Superintendent. “When enrolment decreases to certain levels it is necessary to seriously consider program viability.”

“Decisions regarding the future of the Junior High Program will be based on results of the Lloyd Garrison Junior High Program Consideration Report, community input and ultimately student learning and success for all students” says Bartlett.
